Foundation rewards top UPSR students

KOTA KINABALU: Going all out for the UPSR exams last year turned out to be a rewarding effort for Betsy Wong Ying Zhan, Christie Clarice Jacie and Visalan Roshan.

The three were named top recipients in the Eco World Foundation UPSR Excellence Award (EAC) here on Saturday evening.

Betsy and Christie of SRK Stella Marris and Visalan of SRK Sacred Heart were presented the Excellence Award for obtaining straight As in the UPSR exams.

Two other top UPSR students – Rebecca Jane Sylvester and Joseph Wong Kai En – were named recipients of the Outstanding Award.

They were among 25 students and six teachers who were rewarded at the event. The remaining 20 students were named recipients of the Most Improved Award.

Each student received a Malay-English dictionary and Adam Khoo’s motivational book entitled Secrets of Successful Teens along with cash prizes of RM200, RM150 and RM100 respectively, according to the categories.

Also at the event, SJK (C) Yick Nam at Inanam near the state capital was named best school for its teachers’ passion and in preparing students for the UPSR exams. It was awarded RM5,000.

Other schools honoured were SK Tanjung Aru 1, SK Kepayan, SRK Stella Marris, SRK Sacred Heart and SJKC (C) Chung Hwa.

The Eco World Foundation was set up last September. It is a charitable arm under the Eco World Development Group Berhad (EcoWorld).

Its chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the awards were among the initiatives being taken by the foundation to help students to fully realise their academic potential.

Some 3,000 primary and secondary school students benefit from the initiative.

Also present at the awards ceremony were Eco World Development Group Berhad COO Datuk S Rajoo, Eco World Foundation CEO Captain (R) Datuk Liew Siong Sing and SJK (C) Yick Nam headmaster Heng Wee Sing.
