Upcycling magic @ EcoFestival 2015; An upbeat World Environment Day celebration

KUALA LUMPUR: After two thrilling back-to-back weekends in Penang and Iskandar Malaysia, Eco World Development Group Berhad (EcoWorld)’s vibrant EcoFestival 2015 came to an exciting end today in Kuala Lumpur.

EcoFestival is the property developer’s unique and upbeat spin on celebrating World Environment Day. EcoWorld, in collaboration with Biji-Biji Initiative, a social enterprise championing sustainable living and the creative reuse of waste – organised EcoFestival to spread awareness of upcycling.

The event took place in the three regions of Penang (20 June), Iskandar Malaysia (27 June) and the Klang Valley – locations where EcoWorld has multiple ongoing developments. The final leg of EcoFestival was held today at EcoWorld’s Eco Sky project site along Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur.

President & CEO of EcoWorld, Dato’ Chang Khim Wah said that EcoFestival focuses on upcycling as the developer likes fresh approaches and pushing the bar in finding innovative means of reducing carbon footprint. Upcycling is the process of turning junk into new and useful objects.

“Through various art installations and attractions in EcoFestival, we hope to shed light on upcycling as a way to create a positive difference for the environment. Upcycling comes in all shapes and sizes. In fact, the EcoWorld Gallery @ Eco Sky is successfully upcycled out of 27 used shipping containers to create a modern sales gallery and show unit,” said Chang.

The main highlight of today’s event was a community art project called “Tree of Life” that’s created entirely out of plastic bottles creatively repurposed into beautiful leaves and flowers. Popular attractions were also interesting upcycled installations crafted through clever technology and engineering:

• Singing Pool Table – sounds and graphic waves are created through the human body interaction with water
• Bicycle Lights – human activity is turned into electricity! Pedalling charges up a generator that powers up LED lights
• Singing Garden – magical sounds are created by touching plants that are hooked up to a capacitive sensor system

The event, which took place from 4pm to 10pm also attracted crowds to its educational workshops. Four workshops on eco-friendly topics on DIY composting, bottle gardening, pallet furniture making and eco-enzymes were open to public.
Festivalgoers also spent time at the Eco Bazaar that showcased products and solutions for healthy wholesome living. For the hungry, special food trucks were brought in to offer tasty items such as soft shell crab burgers, tacos, hot dogs and croquettes.

The festival was livened up by street performances that included a drums circle, freestyle circus, jugglers and face & henna painting. There was also a live performance by local singer-songwriter Jes Ebrahim.
